By train

I would never think of going straight from Moscow or St. Petersburg to Bilbao. And rightly so! The trip is not long and will take at least two days. If your plans do not include visiting such European capitals as , (you will have to make so many transfers), then I would choose a plane.

But, if you do decide, you should know that:

• There is a direct night train (Belorussky Station) - Paris (Gare du Nord) - 37 hours travel time / standard price - 149.85 EUR. This way you will bypass Warsaw and Berlin.
• Then a direct flight (see the station on the ticket) – Barcelona (Barcelone) – 16 hours on the road, price from 140 EUR.
• The last leg of the route Barcelona – Bilbao (Abando) – 7 hours on the road, price from 26.15 EUR.

It is better to purchase all tickets online in advance. I advise you to buy as early as possible, there are often discounts.

Getting from Bilbao Abando Station to the center will not be difficult because you are already in the center!

In case you are traveling to Bilbao from another city in Spain...

Attention! Lifehack. If you want to travel around Spain, the best option is to purchase the RENFE Spain Pass. It allows you to use all high-speed trains in Spain (AVE), long and short distances. By bus

Of course, it would be stupid to talk about traveling by bus from Russia. If traveling by train is all right, then by bus for such a long time, and even with transfers, you will have to go through all seven circles of hell (perhaps you will even find the eighth). The route of such a trip is similar to what I described above for trains and will take about the same time. The only advantage is the price. A bus ticket will cost you several times cheaper than a train or plane. For example, – – 35 EUR (compare with 140!).

I’d better tell you about what opportunities you have if you are already in Spain and want to come to Bilbao or leave Bilbao to nearby cities. In this case, the bus is the most convenient and cheapest form of transportation.

The bus station - TermiBus - is located in the heart of the city of Bilbao, and serves as the departure point for a huge number of regional, national and international companies. From here you can drive to a wonderful city (75 minutes) - it is not to be missed, as is San Sebastian (75 minutes)! Ticket price – 6.64 EUR. You can even get into . Arrive at Avenida de Las Americas in 4-5 hours. Price – 38 EUR – but I would skip it.

The most common bus companies are ALSA. I have more than once had difficulty finding a stopping place, so the best option is to ask or find through Google maps “Estación de Autobuses de …”. Tickets can be purchased through a machine or at the box office. You cannot buy tickets from the driver! You need to print out the ticket, or show an SMS confirming the purchase. The ticket price will be approximately 7–8 EUR per hundred kilometers.

Travel companion service

I talk in more detail about what a travel companion service is in my article about in the section. Here I just want to emphasize that this service also works in Spain, but with a slight amendment.

It is a big misconception that everyone must speak English, and the Spanish are no exception. In the Basque Country, everyone is friendly and will try to help you, which cannot be said about the Spaniards. Traveling around Spain, I saw that the Spaniards are only “open” to have fun, but are selfish and cold to calls for help, so if you get stuck somewhere on an autovia (Spanish national road), don’t expect anyone to will stop. On the contrary, look for any “non-Spaniard”; even the British will be more responsive than them.

When is the season? When is the best time to go

The climate of the hilly city of Bilbao is very different from the rest of the predominantly flat Spain - it is oceanic. He pours out his sorrows and sorrows on innocent residents and tourists in the form of rain. Yes, Bilbao is not a city of the sun.

It is almost impossible not to get caught in the rain here. Throughout my entire trip, it rained in Bilbao in the morning or evening (this was in August). So get your umbrellas, sweatshirts or jumpers ready, and I advise you to plan a route that will be mostly under the roof (but don’t be scared!).

Museum of Fine Arts (Museo de Bellas Artes de Bilbao)

A museum left in the shadow of the Guggenheim Museum, but if you, like me, are a fan of true art, then you cannot miss the masterpieces of El Greco, Goya, Murillo, Ribera and many other Spanish artists. Also, you will have the opportunity to meet local “provincial” Basque painters.

My advice, do not pass by “The Rape of Europa” by Martin de Vos, as well as the pearls of the collection “Lucretia” by Lucas Cranach the Elder and works by Van Dyck.

Basque Museum and Cultural Center (Euskal Museoa Bilbao Museo Vasco)

A museum that I missed on my trip - and in vain. The ancient building of the 16th century is quite chaotically filled with various artifacts, sculptures, paintings, ancient household items of the ancient and mysterious Escaudi (Basque) people. To make it more interesting for you to go, I will say that the Basques are considered the most ancient people, and their language is almost the very first to appear on earth. They are also relatives of our Georgians.

• The Bridge of Saint Anthony (Puente de San Antón) is located next to the Church of Saint Anthony and is the most emblematic bridge of Bilbao.
• Mercado de la Ribera, located next to the Church of St. Anthony, is another architectural monument of Bilbao. This is one of the largest indoor markets in Europe.

• Palace of the Vizcaya Deputation (Palacio de la Diputación). The exquisitely decorated palace is located on Grand Vía.

• Ayuntamiento (City Hall) (also known as la Casa Consistorial or Udaletxea) Plaza Ernesto Erkoreka, 94-420-4200. The town hall building was rebuilt in 1892. Designed by architect Joaquín Rucoba in the neo-baroque style.

• Olabarri Palace (Palacio de Olábarri), Campo Volantín, 37, Palacete del Puerto Autónomo de Bilbao, tel. 94-487-1200. It is an interesting mixture of several architectural styles.

Parks

Bilbao is not rich in parks, but as I said earlier, it is clear that sunny days are not so easy to come by here. But nevertheless, there will be a couple.

Parque Etxebarria Parkea

Walking from Plaza Nueva, rising higher and higher, you will find a simple, but still pleasant park for walks and morning jogging.

It is very pleasant to stroll here on a hot summer day, hiding in the shade of the trees. The walk from one end to the other will take approximately 20-30 minutes. It will be very tempting to come here with your family.

Parque de Doña Casilda de Iturrizar

Not far from the Guggenheim Museum and the river promenade, on the way to the San Mamés football stadium, you will find a small park.

Not so long ago this was the only park in the city. It is also home to the fine art museum I mentioned earlier.

Tourist streets

As I already said, Bilbao is just starting to gain momentum as a tourist city, so I will highlight those streets that I would recommend you walk along.

Paseo del Arenal

The Paseo del Arenal promenade runs along the Narvien River, where you can explore Bilbao's most modern attractions. The easiest way to get there is by metro (Casco Viejo station), where, after visiting the tourism office and possibly borrowing a BilbaoCard, go to the elegant city hall (hotel de ville). This is the very place where you can take the first photo overlooking the river embankment (la ria).

Le Paseo Campo Volantin

Chances are you won't even be able to miss this boardwalk. You will reach it as soon as you cross the amazing “White Bridge” (Zubizuri), designed by Santiago Calatrava (who also designed the Lyon train station) in the form of a harp. This bridge is located near the Guggenheim Museum and it will definitely attract your attention. From here you can also take the d'Artxanda funicular, which I mentioned earlier.

Le Paseo Urbitarte

If you first chose Le Paseo Campo Volantin, then you couldn't help but notice the huge spaceship - the Guggenheim Museum. Now you can go back and walk along the other side of the embankment under the huge spider, if you don't have arachnophobia, and enjoy the futuristic architecture.

Gran Via Don Diego Lopez de Haro

If you love boutiques and shopping, then Gran Via Don Diego Lopez de Haro is for you. It is literally dotted with shop windows and fashion boutiques. The easiest way to get there is to take the tram back to City Hall. In principle, in the entire quarter de lEnsanche de Bilbao you will find quite a few malls and shops where you can find everything your heart desires. Along the road of shopping, you can find many interesting buildings and palaces, such as the Chavarri Palace or the Palace of the Vizcaya Provincial Council.

What to see in 1 day

In case you find yourself in Bilbao only for 1 day, then, in order to make it the most eventful and original, I propose this quite non-trivial route:

1. 9.00. It’s worth starting the day by walking along the same Paseo del Arenal, having previously grabbed a map of Bilbao so as not to get lost. The BilbaoCard gives discounts on many restaurants, cafes, shows and shops. To do this, you arrive at the Casco Viejo metro station, find and walk to the city hall. The first photos of a hug, hashtags, happy faces, Instagram, all this should be done here, so that you can then relax and enjoy the city.
2. 10.00. Flight over the city. You will cross the White Bridge and stroll along the magnificent embankment of the Narvièon River - Le Paseo Campo Volantin. From here you will have a wonderful view of the Guggenheim Museum. But this is the highlight of the city - take your time. First take the funicular d'Artxanda. 3 minutes and you are at a bird's eye view over the city (800 meters). So be it, you can take another photo with a view of the city, hills and river. Take your time to go down.
3. 11.00. Are you perhaps hungry? Enjoy a small breakfast right here on the hill, with a magnificent view of Bilbao. Remember this view, perhaps this is exactly what you will remember in old age or when you are bored at work. Choose any cafe and try Basque tapas (I also recommend trying it in the old town).
4. 12.00. Finally, the highlight of the city is the Guggenheim Museum. It's up to you to decide whether to come in or not. The inspection will take approximately 2–3 hours. But believe me, even though this is contemporary art, you will not regret either money or time - it will not leave you indifferent. And if you regret it, I still won’t return them to you, and your mood will deteriorate. Take a walk along the embankment, take a photo in front of a giant (12 meters) flower terrier puppy (this is the avant-garde), walk around the museum from all sides, enjoy the greatness of the architect’s genius.
5. 14.00. Dinner time. And there is nothing easier and better than going to a restaurant inside a museum. Here you can try Basque cuisine. At a slow, satisfying pace, rafting yourself along the promenade, you will come out into the park (Doña Casilda de Iturrizar), where you will see the Museum of Fine Arts. If you still have the strength and desire, then be sure to visit it. This will take you an hour or two.
6. From the museum, you can also take a tour bus that will take you to 15 of Bilbao's most remarkable sites.
7. 17.00. You can now stroll through the Ensanche de Bilbao quarter– commercial and shopping zone. After making a few purchases (optional), you will reach Gran Via Don Diego Lopez de Haro - the most stylish street in Bilbao. Here you will see onlookers just like you strolling through the magnificent city of arts. Enjoy palaces, bizarrely shaped buildings.
8. 19.00. If you have the means, you can find many prestigious restaurants here. The best and most expensive in the city. Here you can taste traditional and new cuisine from Vizcaya and Spain in general.
9. If you like to dance, there are plenty of places to have a drink and dance along Alameda de Urquijo, Alameda Mazarredo and le quai Urbitarte.
10. If you are an aristocrat at heart, then you should go to la place Circular, where you will see the statue of Don Diego Lopez de Jaro, the founder of the city. Turn left and you enter the Albia Garden, ideal for relaxing. Why? Yes, because here you will find Café Iruña, a historical site of political and literary battles with magnificent decorations.

What to see in the area

The Basque region is rich in attractions, especially natural ones. Here I will list just a few that I consider a must-see.

San Sebastián (100 km)

If you have already arrived in Bilbao and have an extra day, then take a look at San Sebastian. One of the most beautiful cities in Europe is one hour away. Concha Promenada, St. Clara Island, Old Port - all this will give you an unforgettable experience.

In 2016, the city was recognized as the European Capital of Culture.

Vitoria-Gasteiz (62 km)

The second largest city in the Basque Country. Initially, it was the capital of the country of Escaudi.

The modern city was recognized as the “green capital” of Europe in 2012 for its many magnificent gardens and parks. Located one hour away. The Cathedral of St. Mary is worth seeing.

Santander (102 km)

A small ancient resort town - the capital of the Cantabrian region - with a bunch of hotels, beaches and bars. An incredibly picturesque peninsula washed by the Atlantic Ocean.

You can also visit:

1. Balmaseda (31 km) is a charming town an hour's drive from Bilbao.
2. Guernica/Gernika, 38 km- a Basque stronghold destroyed by the Nazis during the Spanish Civil War. Inspired Picasso to create the masterpiece “Guernica”, which is now kept in the Museo Reina Sofia in Madrid.
3. Sopelana and Getxo– two coastal towns, which I already wrote about in the beaches section (13 km from Bilbao). You can get there by metro or bus.
4. Portugalete (15 km)- the town where you will find yourself if you listen to my advice and come to see the Eiffel Bridge.
5. San Juan de Gaztelugatxe (35 km) is a small chapel located on an island between Bilbao and Bermeo, the beauty of which is simply breathtaking.

Food. What to try

Let's talk about food. The Basque region thrives on the fusion of three cultures: Gascon, Spanish, Basque, which has greatly influenced the local gastronomy. It is almost impossible to visit Bilbao and not try the local cuisine. If you want to learn more about Spanish cuisine
