What can you take in hand luggage on a plane? What can and cannot be carried in checked luggage on a plane?

There are different requirements for items carried on an airplane in checked luggage and carry-on luggage.

When traveling by air, a person takes with him things that he will need along the way. They have the status of hand luggage, which can be carried on board the plane, or luggage, which will be placed in the luggage compartment.

Hand luggage in 2020 must meet the following requirements:

  • dimensions do not exceed 56x45x25 cm;
  • weight 5-12 kg;
  • this type of baggage is inspected before boarding in the presence of the passenger;
  • on an airplane, hand luggage is placed on a shelf or under a seat;

In areas where emergency exits are located, luggage must not be placed under the seat.

Airplane baggage carries items whose weight corresponds to:

  • per passenger in business class - 30 kg;
  • in economy - 20 kg;
  • for a child under 2 years old - 10 kg.

How much baggage can you carry in economy class?

The aircraft itself and its loading and unloading hatch must be adapted to carry such cargo. You need to find out in advance from the company whether it is possible to transport oversized cargo. There are also options when you have to transport fragile goods, such as banks, sets, etc. In this case, a special tag is affixed to such luggage, which warns about the nature of the cargo. However airlines do not bear any responsibility for the safety of fragile cargo.

International transportation regulations and standards

Baggage is an important component for an airplane flight. A lot depends on how companies build their cargo policy. A number of recommendations and rules have been developed at the international level:

  • there are ICAO standards that recommend certain transportation rules to all international organizations;
  • there are standards adopted by aviation organizations of specific countries;
  • adopts its own rules, which are mandatory for those who use the services of a particular airline.

These regulations apply both to those who transport things in the aircraft cabin and to those who move them in luggage.

How to avoid trouble

The wheelchair itself is checked in as luggage for the duration of the flight, and you can only carry one battery. Prohibited items also include weapons. But there are options when collectible or hunting items and ammunition for them can be transported with a special permit. To do this you need:

  • at the stage of purchasing a ticket, you must declare your desire to transport such an item;
  • two permits must be issued: for export and for storage;
  • the weapon must be in a special case, the cartridges must be in the packaging.

If you are transporting hunting weapons, you must arrive for registration two hours before. They hand over their weapons at registration and receive them when they arrive at their destination. The weight of the transported item must not exceed 5 kg.

Despite the fact that there are options to transport weapons with a special permit, there are exceptions here, when prohibited items cannot be transported onto an aircraft, even with a special permit. Such things include cartridges for gas pistols.

Hand luggage: what can and cannot be taken on a plane?

Carry-on luggage raises many questions. To avoid any hassles when boarding a flight, learn about basic security requirements and airline baggage restrictions on board the plane. Prohibited items, number of pieces, size and weight of hand luggage, rules for transporting liquids, food and medicine.

What can you take on a plane?

If hand luggage is not the only baggage you are flying with, then you should take with you on the plane only the most valuable and necessary items on the road that are allowed for transportation:

  • money
  • bank cards
  • documentation
  • equipment and gadgets (phone, camera, computer, tablet)
  • jewelry
  • fragile items

The rest of the contents of your carry-on luggage depends on the airline's baggage requirements and your desire to carry it all. Take the test:

All current information about the rules for carrying hand luggage is posted on the websites of airports and airlines. Safety standards are mandatory for everyone, and the number of pieces, weight and size of hand luggage are regulated by airlines.

What not to take in hand luggage

It is prohibited to carry dangerous objects and substances in the aircraft cabin and checked baggage:

  • weapon
  • flammable substances and liquids
  • liquefied gases
  • explosives
  • toxic/radioactive/poisonous/caustic substances
  • piercing and sharp objects

In hand luggage you cannot carry seemingly harmless household items: a corkscrew, a file with sharp edges and nail clippers, scissors, tweezers, a straight razor, a penknife, a corkscrew, knitting needles. All this must be checked in as luggage, and if it is not there, then look for alternatives or buy on the spot. For example, an electric razor or a razor with replaceable units is allowed to be carried in hand luggage, and nail files can be soft.

Rules for transporting liquids in hand luggage

How much liquid can I carry?

Unless additional security measures are introduced, liquids with a total volume of 1 liter in packages of no more than 100 ml are allowed to be carried in hand luggage. You can carry any amount of liquids in any volumes in your luggage.

Liquids include: water, drinks, creams, lotions, aerosols, gels, foams, pastes, etc. Cosmetics (mascara, lip gloss) are also liquids. Keep in mind that if a 200 ml shampoo bottle is half filled, it cannot be carried. The fluids of people flying together do not add up.

Exception: baby food needed by the child during the flight; medications and dietary foods with a doctor’s certificate/prescription.

Where can I get 100 ml containers?

Do not throw away bottles of shampoos and shower gels provided in hotels. Most cosmetic brands sell or give away mini sets of cosmetics with purchase. You can buy a set of liquid containers and fill them with your own liquids.

When going through security control, liquids must be presented separately in a transparent resealable bag. You can buy a bag that meets the requirements at stationery stores (a file with a zipper); a food storage bag with a Zip-Lock or a transparent cosmetic bag with a zipper is also suitable. Some airlines impose additional restrictions on the size of a bag with liquids: 20x20cm, 18x20cm.

Changes to the rules for transporting liquids

During the Olympics in Sochi, the Federal Air Transport Agency introduced a complete ban on the transport of liquids on airplanes. Restrictions may vary from country to country - please check for current information before departure. If during pre-flight inspection it turns out that you have violated the rules for transporting liquids, you will be asked to get rid of the prohibited item yourself (throw it into a special container). Discussions on this topic are useless; they can lead to missed boarding or removal from the flight.

Food in hand luggage

You can take fruits, nuts, hard cheese, sausage, muesli bars, and sandwiches on board. Hand luggage should not contain products prohibited for transportation by customs regulations and liquids with a volume of more than 100 ml. Water and food can be purchased after going through pre-flight security in the “clean zone”; food and drinks on board are offered by most airlines (included in the ticket or purchased separately). You can take an empty water bottle with you and ask the flight attendant to fill it.

Medicines in hand luggage

You are allowed to carry medicines in their original packaging in hand luggage. Check in advance whether your medications are legal in your destination country. If medications are prescribed by a doctor, it is better to take it with you. Liquid medicines (gels, aerosols, ointments, ampoules) are subject to the rules for transporting liquids - no more than 100 ml. If the medicine is vital, notify the airport staff and present a doctor's certificate or an extract from your medical history.

Number of pieces of hand luggage

The number of pieces of hand luggage is regulated by the airline. As a rule, you are allowed to take 1 piece of luggage into the cabin. Business and first class passengers are allowed to carry 2 pieces of hand luggage. Most large airline companies do not count a handbag or men's briefcase, umbrella, laptop, suit or dress in a clothing case as a separate item.

Budget airlines have strict baggage requirements, following the rule: 1 person = 1 piece of hand luggage. The exceptions are folding strollers, crutches, and outerwear. You are almost always allowed to take a Duty Free package on board.

Size and weight of hand luggage

The dimensions and weight of the baggage that you can take into the cabin also depend on the requirements of the airline, the class of the ticket and the flight route. Carry-on luggage can be a small suitcase, backpack, bag.

Standard carry-on baggage size requirements: no more than 115 cm in the sum of three dimensions (55x40x20cm). Hand luggage weight is 5-10 kg. Example: a standard-sized suitcase for transportation in the cabin of an airplane.

At the airport, you can always check your weight at a free check-in counter and transfer extra kilos to your checked baggage. If you're flying with only carry-on baggage, this won't happen, so check your carry-on baggage weight at home on a bathroom scale. Low-cost airlines check framed luggage, it must fit completely into the frame, including wheels and handles.

Check with your airline about transportation of sports equipment, musical instruments and other oversized items. Before you buy anything on a trip, think about whether there is free space in your luggage; you will have to pay extra for excess space.

The benefits of traveling light

  • You save on airfare.
  • Items in your hand luggage are guaranteed to fly with you (if you don’t leave them unattended or forget them).
  • You don't have to stand at the front desk (in most cases).
  • You don't have to wait for baggage claim, so you leave the airport faster than anyone else and get to your destination.

    Carry-on luggage is the name given to items that every passenger on an airliner can take into the cabin. The size and weight of allowed luggage is determined by the carrier, and these parameters differ significantly from company to company. However, there is a list of things that cannot be taken as hand luggage on a plane, and everyone needs to know it so that there are no problems when boarding. We bring to your attention the new rules for 2020 regulating the contents of hand luggage and baggage in Russia.

    Items that should not be taken into the salon

    As in the rules of previous years, passengers are strictly prohibited from carrying any weapons in the cabin of the airliner. The list includes:

    • Firearms and traumatic weapons (pistols, rifles, revolvers, machine guns, machine guns, etc.);
    • Edged weapons (daggers, knives, sabers and swords);
    • Throwing weapons (grenades, knives, bows).

    Please note that it is prohibited to take even toy weapons that imitate existing models in reality.

    Substances prohibited on board under new rules

    The list of substances prohibited for carriage as hand luggage includes flammable liquids. These include compounds whose flash point does not exceed 66 degrees: diethyl ether, cyclohexane, benzene, acetone and ethanol, alcohols, various aromatic compounds, turpentine, kerosene. In ordinary language, you cannot take varnishes and paints, printer inks, tinctures, ethers, sealants, cosmetic lotions, solvents and solvents on board.

    The second type of prohibited substances is explosives. They are divided into liquid (nitroglycerin, ethyl nitrate, nitroglycol), gel, suspension (ammonium nitrate mixtures), emulsion and solid (till, hexogen and nitrate).

    Radioactive substances also cannot be taken in hand luggage. These are mixtures or compositions containing radioactive isotopes (germanium, vanadium, cadmium, selenium, zirconium, molybdenum, rubidium and others). Accordingly, you will not be allowed on the plane if you are taking with you isotopes necessary for treatment or diagnosis, or gamma ray logging instruments.

    When landing, oxidizing substances are also confiscated from you, which may not be flammable, but at the same time provoke and support the combustion of other materials. The list of oxidizing substances unacceptable for carriage in hand luggage includes:

    • Hydrogen peroxide;
    • Bleaches;
    • Perchloric acid solution;
    • Ammonium chlorate;
    • Ammonium bromate;
    • Fertilizers containing ammonium nitrate;
    • Ammonium nitrite and its solutions;
    • Mixtures based on sodium nitrite, potassium nitrate and ammonium salts.

    And the last group of substances that cannot be taken into the salon according to the new rules of 2020 are toxic and infectious substances that, if inhaled, interacting with the skin or entering the body through food, can cause death, severe poisoning or illness. This group also includes pathogenic bacteria that are dangerous to the health and life of people and pets.

    Procedure for confiscating prohibited objects

    If, during the inspection of your hand luggage before boarding, you are found to have objects and substances prohibited for transportation, they will be confiscated. During the seizure process, airport employees will issue a report.

    If the seized items are on free sale, but cannot be transported in the aircraft cabin, they will be given to mourners or left for storage at the airport.

    If a passenger is found with cartridges or gas weapons without accompanying documents, they will be immediately handed over to the police, and a passenger attempting to smuggle objects, the carrying and possession of which carries criminal liability, will be removed from the flight and handed over to the internal affairs authorities.

    Exceptions to the 2020 rules

    When packing your carry-on luggage, there are a few things you can put in your bag that are exceptions to the lists above:
    • A bottle of vinegar no more than half a liter in volume;
    • Alcoholic drinks up to 70% in manufacturer's packaging;
    • Cosmetic aerosols with a volume of no more than 0.5 liters;
    • Nail polishes;
    • Lighters and vessels for refilling them (no more than two);
    • One medical thermometer;
    • No more than two kilograms of dry ice for cooling food products;
    • 3% hydrogen peroxide in a bottle of up to 100 ml;
    • One hand-held blood pressure monitor.

    Additional airline requirements

    Some air carriers have tightened the rules for carrying hand luggage, adding potentially dangerous objects to the generally prohibited items that could cause a passenger injury to others. These included corkscrews for uncorking bottles, needles for injections (in the absence of medical indications confirmed by a certificate), knitting needles and hooks for knitting, nail scissors and penknives.

    To avoid problems during inspection, read the hand luggage rules of the selected company. They are usually published on the airline's online website.

    Updated: 09/16/2019

    Today there is a whole list of things that cannot be taken into the cabin for safety reasons. Unfortunately, not all tourists know what you can't take on a plane t some items, as a result of which, already during inspection at the airport, they find themselves in an unpleasant situation in which they are forced to throw into the trash bin sometimes high-quality and expensive items, the carriage of which is prohibited in the aircraft cabin. The article below provides a list of items that are best initially transported not in hand luggage, but in luggage or even left at home.

    Things you shouldn't take on a plane

    ★ Weapons. As, in general, it’s easy to guess, you can’t take weapons of any kind on the plane. Moreover, we are talking about both real weapons: pistols, rifles, light machine guns, edged weapons, and imitation weapons, including ordinary children’s toys (although I think a pink or bright green children’s “blaster” made of plastic will be missed :). This same category of things that cannot be taken on an airplane includes ammunition, explosives, gas cartridges, as well as other means of attack and defense that can be used to carry out criminal acts. It is also better not to take a lighter or matches into the aircraft cabin, as they will most likely have to be thrown away during the security check.

    ★ Piercing and cutting objects. Penknives and kitchen knives, regular and manicure scissors, straight razors, metal nail files, screwdrivers, blades and other sharp objects that may be assessed by airport security as potentially dangerous and will not be allowed on board the aircraft. And don’t expect too much that a samurai sword or machete bought as a souvenir and not yet sharpened will be allowed to be carried on board under the pretext that they do not pose a danger.

    Most likely, these items will delight not you and your friends when you return home, but the children of security service workers or themselves (if your rich collection of the latter does not yet have such things). I managed to carry regular blades into the cabin of the plane (I accidentally left them in the pocket of a leather folder - I noticed only when returning home), as well as folding nail scissors (I took a deliberate risk, since they were needed on a long trip). True, this does not guarantee that during the next flight you or I will be able to repeat this, because there is always a human factor, and the equipment at airports is constantly being improved.

    Liquids. The category of liquids includes drinks (including alcoholic drinks), gels, lotions, pastes, creams, shaving foams, etc. In reality, there are certain volumes of liquids that can be taken into the cabin of an airplane quite legally. This is described in detail in a separate article on the website. Also in the article at the link you can find out what exceptions exist for transporting liquids such as baby food and medicines on an airplane.

    ★ Dangerous substances. You cannot take aggressive chemicals, poisons, flammable substances, radioactive or toxic substances on the plane. Even if all of these substances are intended to be used exclusively for peaceful purposes upon arrival in the city or country of destination, their transportation in the aircraft cabin is very dangerous, so at best you will have to throw them away in a special trash bin. In the worst case, you will have to explain for a long time and repeatedly to the distrustful employees of the airport security service and other security services why you tried to bring all this on board. Do you need it?

    ★ Food. Not everyone knows that you can bring food on board an airplane, but again there are a number of restrictions that relate to the type of food, its packaging and volume. Detailed information on this topic is presented in the article, I advise you to read it in order to avoid troubles at the airport when going through security.

    ★ Animals and birds. With a few exceptions, which include some small living creatures, you cannot take animals and birds on a plane, even if you have a full set of documents about their health and safety for others. If you really need to take your animal with you, you will most likely have to put it in a special isolated compartment in the luggage compartment. You can read more about transporting animals on an airplane in the article.

    ★ Other items, prohibited for transportation at a particular airport or by the rules of carriage of a particular airline. Before going to the airport, I advise you to carefully search on the official website of the airport for information about what you cannot take on the plane specifically from them. It often happens that due to certain events in the city or country of departure, additional restrictions are introduced on the carriage of certain items. For example, a complete ban on the carriage of liquids on board due to events in the country or certain products due to the imposed quarantine.

    I also advise you to familiarize yourself with the list of things that are prohibited from being carried in hand luggage by the internal rules of the airline you have chosen. This may concern not only the type of objects and their purpose, but also their weight and size. For example, one airline may allow some items of sports equipment or musical instruments to be carried in the cabin, while another may allow it only in the luggage compartment.

    I think the few extra minutes you spend searching for the information you need will not be in vain, because in return you will gain confidence that some of your things that you value and do not want to lose are not on the list of things that cannot be taken into the cabin. And confidence and calm will, in turn, allow you to avoid unnecessary anxiety at the airport, which will make your holiday abroad more comfortable and memorable from the very beginning of the journey.

    At the end of the article, I would like to remind you that if you find yourself in a situation in which you had to leave (read - throw away) your valuable item, which was discovered during an inspection and classified as prohibited, do not create scandals and hysterics (because of which you may even be sent to prison). a rather humiliating personal search with a forced “striptease”). Flight safety is not a personal whim of the workers conducting the inspection, but a high degree of guarantee of the protection of all flight passengers from terrorist attacks and armed criminals. Therefore, before each flight (especially if you do not have them very often), run your eyes through the list of things that cannot be taken on a plane and according to the list of items allowed for carriage in hand luggage. I wish you pleasant and safe flights!

    Hi all! I think every traveler wants to have a comfortable and safe flight. But this is simply impossible without knowing what is prohibited from being carried on an airplane.

    At first glance, it may seem that there is no logic in these rules. But believe me, this is not so.

    The most important principle that unites all these rules: you cannot take with you objects and substances that could interfere with the normal operation of the ship or pose a threat to the aircraft, crew and passengers. All rules follow from it. I recommend that you read them very carefully.

    In this article:

    1. Dummies

    Now there are a lot of things that do not pose a threat, but look like dangerous objects. For example:

    • alarm clock in the form of a stick of dynamite
    • toy machine guns, pistols (which children love to buy as gifts)

    No one is saying that these items are prohibited from being transported at all. BUT! They are definitely prohibited from being carried in hand luggage - that’s it. Secondly, there may be increased interest in them from security, so be prepared.

    2. Explosives and all objects stuffed with them

    This includes everything that can explode, catch fire or contribute to this. Of course, it is quite difficult to imagine that some passenger in a suitcase of acceptable weight and size checks in TNT or takes a briefcase with cartridges into his hand luggage.

    But you can get into trouble with seemingly harmless sparklers. They also cannot be transported. In general: neither in checked luggage nor in hand luggage.

    Cool fireworks for the New Year or wedding - here.

    3. Compressed / liquefied gas

    A gas cylinder, which is still relevant today, as a rule, in rural areas, and a gas cylinder for self-defense are noticeably different from each other. But both of them are not allowed on the plane.

    The exception to this clause is:

    • Gas, which is used to ensure the movement of prostheses;
    • Gas used to fill life jackets;

    One passenger can carry a small disposable lighter on board.

    4. Flammable liquids and substances

    Perhaps, taking a can of gasoline with you can save a lot of money. But the plane is not suitable for this.

    Those who make repairs and want to bring paint, glue, varnish, and solvent back from their trip will also be disappointed. All this is also impossible.

    5. Toxins, any poisons, strong acids

    It is quite logical that all these things pose a threat to people’s lives and health.

    By the way, despite the fact that mercury is a poisonous substance, you can carry one mercury thermometer with you in your hand luggage. It is allowed. BUT! I'm just asking you in a humane way. If you don’t carry a glass thermometer with you, buy an electronic one, the price is 150 rubles.

    6. Weapons: firearms, pneumatic, electric shock, most types of cold weapons

    An exception is made for crossbows, sabers, checkers, hunting rifles, bayonets, swords, daggers, and hunting knives. All this can be carried, but only in the luggage compartment.

    I already talked about toy weapons - everything goes in your luggage.

    A food processor, a sausage slicer, a meat grinder, a drill, and a screwdriver are also passengers in the luggage compartment.

    7. Oxidizing substances and organic peroxides

    Bleaching powder belongs to this group. This also includes hydrogen peroxide.

    8. Radioactive materials

    Comments are unnecessary, I think.

    9. All items of unacceptable weight and dimensions for transportation

    Everything here is extremely simple: an unmanageable load of enormous size simply will not fit on the plane.

    In general, all the information you need on this issue can always be clarified on the airline’s website, by calling the help desk, or from the tour operator who is organizing your trip.

    If a prohibited item is found in your luggage...

    Anything that is prohibited from being carried or poses a threat to the lives of others is confiscated by airport employees. You can see what things some people try to take with them.

    If your belongings contained items and substances that can be freely purchased in Russia, but cannot be imported into the country of destination or simply transported on an airplane, then they will simply be confiscated, and you will continue your journey.

    If in the traveler’s belongings they find items the sale of which is prohibited in ordinary life (weapons, drugs), then they are also confiscated. The only difference is that the passenger will continue his journey in a completely different direction. But I’m sure this won’t happen to you, my dears.
